From Nicki Minaj's wardrobe malfunction to Blue Ivy's first epic appearance on live TV, this year's MTV Video Music Awards were full of surprises. In case you missed it, we recap the 6 must-see moments of the night.
1. Nicki Minaj Can’t Keep Her Clothes On
With her recent “Anaconda” music video, we were all prepared for a bootylicious show. Surprisingly, Nicki Minaj twerking in a sexy Posion Ivy ensemble wasn’t the most shocking part of her performance. The Nicki Minaj/Ariana Grande/Jessie J medley ended with a bang during “Bang Bang,” when Minaj came out for her rap busting out of her dress. However, one zipper malfunction didn’t keep her from doing what she does best.
2. Miley Cyrus Grows Up
From twerking to philanthropy? In lieu of accepting her Video of the Year award for “Wrecking Ball,” she tearfully sent Jesse, a runaway/homeless teen in Los Angeles, to the podium. Cyrus met him at the nonprofit My Friends Place and is now kickstarting a campaign to raise awareness about youth homelessness and runaways. While no one expected her newfound maturity since last year’s scandalous performance, it’s clear she’s just being Miley.
3. Sam Smith is the New Adele
Forget Auto-Tune and over-the-top dance numbers. Accompanied by solely a piano, Sam Smith blew the audience away with his live performance of “Stay With Me.” To see J.Lo teary eyed and the Kardashian sisters swaying to his song, watch the entire jaw-dropping performance here.
4. Katy Perry Channels 2001 Britney Spears
This picture takes us back to the days when frosted hair tips were socially acceptable and Justin and Britney were the best couple in pop music history. Even Britney Spears appluaded Perry's denim throwback.
5. Queen Bey Still Reigns
As expected, Beyonce killed it during her 16 minute performance in a stunning bedazzled bodysuit. With Jay Z calling her “the greatest living entertainer,” she clearly proved her husband’s claim, dancing and singing her heart out while never missing a beat. While focusing on her amazing powerhouse vocals, she kept it classy - only Beyonce could make pole dancing incredibly sexy and tasteful at the same time.
After this amazing performance, she clearly deserved the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. All hail Queen Bey.
Blue Ivy is Flawless
While Beyonce was fabulous, it seems her daughter stole the show. During her mother’s performance, Blue Ivy can be seen showing off her own flawless dance moves.
This unbelievably adorable moment, along with her congratulating Mama B on stage, made Blue Ivy the true star of the VMAs. According to Twitter, she’s even trendier than her mom – and she’s two.
